November Message to Families
Today marks the 40th day of school, and we are thrilled with the great start to our school year!
As we move into the winter season, our teachers have led classes on engaging field trips, offered a variety of extracurricular clubs, completed literacy and numeracy assessments, and are focusing on ways to support each student’s academic growth.
At Erickson Elementary, we believe that each day is a new opportunity to grow. These formative years shape the habits and mindset that will guide our students for life. While what they learn is essential, how they learn is equally important, as it builds brain pathways that support all future learning. Humans are uniquely capable of continually adapting their brains, which is why we provide diverse learning experiences, covering math, science, social studies, music, art, languages, and athletics. This varied exposure offers students a well-rounded view of the world and helps them build essential habits like perseverance, a strong work ethic, and the confidence to face challenges.
Each year, we observe trends that highlight common traits among students who achieve success. Research consistently underscores that the following practices at home can have a meaningful impact on student achievement:
Reading at Home
Reading daily is one of the strongest predictors of academic success. Studies show that students who read regularly at home perform better across all subjects. Reading aloud together—even if your student reads below grade level—strengthens their literacy skills and rewires the brain for learning in real time. For students reading below grade level, 15-20 minutes of daily reading can help bridge the gap.
Limiting Screen Time
Research indicates that students with limited screen time often have longer attention spans, higher focus levels, improved sleep quality, and more positive social interactions. Reducing screen time, especially before bed, can contribute significantly to these benefits.
Prioritizing Sleep
Elementary students who consistently get 10+ hours of sleep each night are 20-30% more likely to perform well academically. Sufficient sleep is essential for memory retention, emotional regulation, and the energy to engage fully in school.
Nutrition and Learning
A balanced diet rich in whole foods, especially fruits and vegetables, has been linked to improved cognitive function, concentration, and overall mental health in children. Children who regularly consume nutritious foods are better equipped for learning and often show greater resilience in their studies.
Participation in Extracurriculars
Involvement in extracurricular activities is associated with a 10-15% increase in engagement and achievement in school. These activities allow students to develop social skills, teamwork, and self-confidence, which are closely tied to academic success.
Attendance Matters
Missing school regularly has a strong negative impact on student learning. Studies show that students who miss 25% or more school days are significantly less likely to meet academic milestones. Consistent attendance helps students stay connected to their learning and reinforces a commitment to their education.
Fostering a Safe Learning Environment
Students who feel safe and have a sense of belonging at school are 20% more likely to reach their academic goals. Having empathy-based conversations at home about relationships and experiences at school can reinforce this. Reporting any incidents of harassment or bullying helps us maintain a supportive and inclusive school community.
As we continue our work with each student, our focus remains on helping them grow each day and supporting their journey to reach their full potential. Our primary areas of focus are literacy, numeracy, and behavior, and we are here to partner with you in fostering positive attitudes toward learning at home. We hope education remains a vibrant topic of conversation in your homes, with students reading and discussing their learning regularly.
Thank you for your ongoing support. We look forward to celebrating each child’s growth and achievements together.
Sincerely,
Principal Brian Hamm
